There are some things out there that we don’t really know why they exist. Mostly because we’ve never been in a situation where we need them, so we can’t figure out why they are necessary. When I first came across the notion of temporary car insurance I had no idea why someone had come up with that. My reasoning was, if you own a car you need to have it insured in order to be street legal – and in that case you’d go for a long term insurance, which is cheaper – and if you’re renting one you can get insurance straight from the renting company. But one day a family member had just bought a new car and was driving it from the dealership to his garage, and his insurance policy would only come into effect the day after that. That’s when it dawned on me that temporary car insurance wasn’t totally useless after all.
Of course, if you do a thorough car insurance comparison, you’ll find that temporary car insurance ends up being a lot more expensive on a per day basis than regular or long term car insurance is. But sometimes it is a good option, and next time you need to drive a new car or even drive a friend’s car somewhere, you should consider it.
